Sezzle

Case Study

Implementing Sezzle Pay Components into Shopping and Payment Experiences

Buy Now Pay Later is becoming more and more prevalent in the retail space, especially since the world went into shockwaves with finances as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. More and more retailers are incorporating several different pay methods into their web and mobile app design, including BNPL plug ins.

The Product

Sezzle is a financial product that allows for flexible financing without a hard credit check. Allowing customers to pay in 4 installments over 6 weeks without any interest rates. For merchants like Best Buy Sezzle offers a responsible way for customers to pay later increasing shopping cart and incremental conversions

Project Overview

The Problem

Customers are likely to skip over items on the page or payment options if they don’t understand what the product is or if the item is placed in an area on a page that already has many items customers can experience what is called “Marketing Blindness”and ultimately skip right over the item that you wanted them to see.

The Goal

To implement Sezzle Pay Button components on the product display page as well as on the checkout pages for payment where customers are able to learn about what Sezzle is and how it works, enroll and use the program securely without exiting the shopping experience pages.

My Role

UX Designer using Figma to update and implement Sezzle design components and CTA buttons onto the PDP (product display page) and checkout pages.

Responsibilities

Empathizing with users, defining problems, ideating solutions, designing paper & digital wireframes, creating low & high-fidelity prototypes, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs. Also presenting designs to stakeholders and finance.

The Summary

I designed wireframes and interactive prototypes with 3 different variations to show to the business and finance teams where the customers would see the Sezzle components on the PDP and on the checkout page. I discovered that many it is important for the user to be able to see the true pricing and learn more directly on the page without too many clicks, and also be able to determine that process is secure and trustworthy.

The Design

Design Implementation

My goal here was to implement the Sezzle components that were clear and easy to understand while the user is actively shopping. The implementation was designed to make things simple and easy to find and understand for customers.

The Digital Wireframes

Already having a PDP and Checkout pages that have been built out made it easy to update and edit the design and incorporate Sezzle into the shopping process and help increase purchases during user experience. Prioritizing helpful buttons and information locations on the home page was a key part of my strategy.

Sezzle Modal

Here I added a pop up modal for customers when they click learn more on the page to make it easier for the user to learn about the product without being led away from the shopping experience.

Sezzle Payment Button in Checkout

Implementing the Sezzle Button Design into the checkout after speaking with stakeholders and getting feedback.

Sezzle Registration Flow Mockups

Based on feedback from stakeholders and the business and also from Sezzle Development Sales team I created the following sign up mockup that is accessed fromt he checkout page to register for the Sezzle Payment Plan.

Next Steps

Usability Study

Conduct follow-up usability testing to explore pain points or hard stops in the shopping process when Sezzle components are added and to identify any new areas of need or changes that need to be made.

Thoughts

BNPL programs are steadily on the rise, but incorporating them into web design can be a little tedious with so many elements already existing on the PDP page. This design project focused on placing the Sezzle components first on the PDP page and then throughout cart and checkout for customers.

Placement is important when making customers aware of their options for payment. Not only do they need to see it, but also have the option to learn more about the option right on the page they are visiting without taking tons of clicks. During this project Sezzle was placed on the PDP and also throughout the experience to make customers aware of their options to purchase.
